Lesson 1/100: Sandwich (Kent)

1 SandwichTravels in English
00:00 / 01:47
  1. Here we are in Sandwich, a real Medieval town in Kent (and not just a tasty lunch)!

  2. In fact, the sandwich was invented by the Earl of Sandwich at the gambling table.

  3. For convenience, he asked for meat to be put in between two slices of bread to save space.

  4. Visit The Butts, a Medieval archery practice field, or Gallows Field where prisoners were executed.

  5. In fact, it wasn’t just prisoners who were killed here; many women who were believed to be witches were drowned.

  6. Strand Street isn’t so grim. Here, you can see many wooden houses.

  7. There is an old church nearby called St Mary’s Church. It was destroyed many times by French invaders between 1217 and 1457.

  8. The Sandwich Weavers is a wonderful old building that used to be used as a workshop by Dutch refugees in the 16th century.

  9. St Peter’s Street sounds lovely, but many years ago it was called Jail Street. Many criminals were sent to prison here!

  10. The Quay is beautiful, but this is where the English armies and their kings embarked for the wars in France.

  11. Like many other European towns and cities, Sandwich was walled in to stop violent raids.

  12. So, next time you eat a sandwich, think about this lovely little southern English town!

Lezione 1/100: Sandwich (Kent)

  9. St Peter’s Street sembra molto bella, ma molti anni fa si chiamava Jail Street. Molti criminali sono stati mandati in prigione qui!
